Scripture Union Daily Guide 23rd April 2025 Outline

God commands that we should not avenge ourselves, but we should leave vengeance to Him (Romans 12:19). However, God uses many things as instruments to avenge for His own. In today’s story, He decided to use His people, the Israelites, to avenge the Midianites. See Numbers 25:1-2,9,16-17 for the reason for this war of vengeance. Moses was carrying out God’s judgment against the Midianites for causing God’s people to stumble.

We must take note of Jesus’ warning in Matthew 18:6-7 and desist from becoming a stumbling block to anyone.
It is strange that Phinehas whose zeal turned God’s anger away from His people and put an end to the ravaging plague in Numbers 25:6-13, did not appear to see anything wrong with bringing into the camp the same women who seduced the men of Israel into adultery and idolatry. Any man can falter and mislead us, doing so deliberately or unknowingly. We must follow the Lord only and never any human.

The action of Moses is commendable. He did not compromise nor accept half obedience from the soldiers. Balaam finally reaped the wages of his sin against God and His people (Numbers 31:8).

* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
Help me, oh lord, to follow you alone and never be a stumbling block to anyone.
